The loss of teeth can be an all-around stressful experience. It causes discomfort, effects speech and eating habits, and can impact the confidence we have in our smile, making us less likely to show it off.
Fortunately, modern dentistry can completely restore a patient’s smile with innovative implant dentistry, a procedure that replaces the tooth’s root as well as the visible crown.
Drs. Christopher Kim and Sonya Austin at Lifetime Dentistry offer dental implants to our patients in Keller and the surrounding communities. Our team is dedicated to giving every patient their most beautiful smile.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants consist of three distinct pieces that work together to completely replace one or more teeth.
The implant is a small, biocompatible titanium post that is surgically placed directly into the jaw. After roughly four months, the site heals and the bone fuses to the implant in a process called osseointegration.
The abutment is the piece that is attached to the top of the implant post. While the implant provides a sturdy foundation, the abutment is the part that the prosthetic is attached to.
The restoration is a beautiful, lifelike crown or bridge fitted onto the abutment. This can be a single crown, a bridge to replace a row of teeth, or even full and partial dentures in some cases.
Why Choose Implant-Supported Restorations?
Missing teeth can be a catalyst for a host of dental issues. For starters, a gap in your smile can result in the rest of your teeth shifting out of alignment. You see, teeth support each other, and just as nature abhors a vacuum, our dental structure attempts to correct a gap by gradually migrating to fill the space.
Furthermore, without a tooth’s root to continually stimulate the jaw through chewing and biting, the bone loses mass in a process known as accelerated bone resorption.
A dental implant not only protects the alignment of your teeth, it also prevents the loss of bone mass, as the implant performs the same functions as a natural root.
